Demonizing Technology On Relationships Research Paper

I recognize the ease of demonizing technology. Technology has had the butt end of plenty of debates about all sorts of things. While I totally see where this article is coming from, I don't think it's telling the whole story.
One thing that really bothered me reading this was that they measured phubbing. Their study left no room open for couples who may their phones a lot and are perfectly happy in their relationships. I think phone usage in your romantic life is just another preference that you have to balance with your partner, like your diet, hobbies, sex drive, etc. Some people have vastly different sex drives than their partners, and some people have vastly different phone attachments than their partners. I have been in relationships

“Nothing kills romance faster than pulling out a smartphone…”- my friend as she was rambling to me, from her recent date experience. Technology is, indeed, slowly killing romance just like Natalie Moore explained in her article “Rule of Thumb: Love in the Age of Texting.” And on my defense, technology does have the power to weaken and hurt relationships.…

Phone checking can become a behavioral addiction, which cues into the dopamine circuits in our brains. Left unchecked, the behavior can lead to challenges in face to face relationships and, in addition to the stress of being "always on," can be a problem in that it takes away from time necessary to be present for in person connection, which we all need for social health. Solutions include boundary setting, mindfulness practices and building the capacity of the prefrontal cortex to engage and intervene, interrupting the cycle of constant checking and soothing the accompanying hypervigilence. It may also be necessary to look at underlying emotions, as any addiction can be a form of avoiding the discomfort of challenging emotional states.…

Describing Theory: Expectancy violations theory (EVT) is a communication theory that examine how individuals respond to unforeseen violations of social norms and expectations. This theory puts an emphasis on individual perception of an interaction for any given social situation. When an individual is in the process of communication, they will form an presumption of how the other party will react. Violation to this presumption can in turn lead to a reaction that will either be positive or negative. We can assume that people will behave in different manners based on their socioeconomic status, beliefs, morals, and cultural values, so one’s perceived reaction may not be the actual one because of those life influences.…

A notable issue I have seen arise since the dawn of the smart phone is the dependence placed on said phones. When walking around the USU campus, waiting at the bus stop, or even eating at a restaurant it is nearly impossible not to see at least one person engulfed in the activity on his or her smart phone. I understand more often than not these people are actually working on something productive. But when these habits translate into quality…
