In the opening of one of the plays, a couple was fighting. To introduce this couple and their history, however, the light source focused in on the couple on a small table set and played harsh sounds. Before the couple began to brawl—quite literally pulling each other’s eyes out—that sound cue gave us the history of these characters and foreshadowed their outcome. The focus on scale, light, and sound are particularly important to the pieces we’re devising in our groups because we have the opportunity to use this technology in them. How to utilize time in a production is a difficult enough process when working only with human actors. Although, it becomes more difficult when those actors are creating characters with puppets. Demolishing Everything was successful in utilizing the puppets properly because they slowed down. A specific moment is when the puppet couple were brawling and the man crouched down on his hands and knees in order to sit on the floor. The puppeteers carefully placed each part down as it would move on a human, bringing a life-like quality to the puppets. On the other hand, as chaos started to build, the puppeteers would move quickly, not focusing as much on the human elements. Rather, they seemed to want to give an idea of what the characters were facing. Time will, therefore, be a main focus for our groups as we devise our pieces. Having differentiation throughout the piece will further create variety for the audience watching and will indicate the emotional state of the puppet. Having studied Bunraku puppets a bit before this class, I was aware of the elements that went into producing a story. Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, however, changed the game for me. It’s possible that I have more of a connection with this production than tradition Bunraku because of the culture in which I grew up.
