Demographic Generation X (Gen Xers) were born between 1965 and 1980. Their age ranges from about 35 to 50 years of age. There are two types of Gen Xers; they include younger Xers whose values lean towards the millennial generation and older Xers whose values lean more towards baby boomers (Maye Create Design, (n.d.)).
Behavioral
Gen Xer is cynical and sophisticated when looking at products, ads, and shopping (Williams & Page, 2011). This generation is not loyal to any brand or company as they tend to jump around a lot. They tend to shop at value-added retailers. Most of their purchasing goes towards the markets of cars, appliances, and child products. They appreciate authenticity and transparency when being marketed towards (Maye Create Design, (n.d.)). According to Rieva Lesonsky (2014), Gen X has three desires; to provide for their family, take care of themselves, and to play it safe. They aim to save money because they must provide for their family and set money aside for college accounts, luxury items, and trips. Using both traditional marketing tactics and using the internet and social media are both needed to reach Gen X. Though there are differences in reaching the younger and older X’s, one thing is the same for both, they both appreciate tonality and authentic messages (Maye Create Design, (n.d.)). The use of direct mail is still effective when reaching Gen X at their home. This is known because a majority of Gen X still sends out hand written cards for personal and professional reasons (Maye Create Design, (n.d.)). A great way to attract Gen X is through email. According to Maye Create Design, (n.d.) email serves as an instant gratification for Gen X whether through personal messages or business matters. The majority of Gen X has learned to be technologically savvy and check their emails frequently, so messages sent through email will be seen. Like college students and Millennials, videos attract Gen X also. The difference for Gen X, however, is that they are more interested in seeing humanity in video and want to be able to approach a company and trust them after seeing their video.
