The Republican party was founded in 1854. The Republicans opposed Democratic ideas when both were founded. However there were a small group of years in which the two parties had the same outlook on government. During these years the parties had lost momentum when running against each other because of their similar ideas. So, to combat this problem the Democrats chose big government and the Republicans went in the opposite direction. Republicans today support a more localized government, and more conservative ideas. A few of these conservative ideas are opposing gay marriage and abortion. Most Republicans are very protective of the second amendment. A big supporter in the fight for the second amendment is the NRA. I won’t get too into the NRA, but they are an enthusiast and gun activist group who fight for citizen’s rights to own firearms. There are actually less Republicans than Democrats, so the Republicans come in at twenty-six percent. Both percentages of Democrats and Republicans are disappointing compared to the percent of citizens who identify as independent voters. The percent of independent voters comes in at a whopping forty-two percent. This giant percent, almost double that of either party, comes from voters who have mixed views and opinions. These people might think more on the conservative side of one thing and more on the liberal side of another
