Criterion 1: “Democratic schools value collaboration and cooperation rather than competition”. (Pugach, 2009, p. 309)
Discussion: Mrs. C does not meet this criterion since, although the desks in her classroom are arranged into pairs, some students sit alone. While every other student is sitting down next to a classmate they can interact and collaborate with, there are three students who sit by themselves. One student is not separated completely from the rest, but he does not have a classmate next to him that he can collaborate with. Another student sits alone next to the back table (See Map), and is left isolated from his classmates. While this student originally was sitting next to other classmates, she was moved to the front of the classroom. This left separated from the rest of the class and unable to see them. Her desk is facing the front, so she has her back turned to her classmates, leaving her unable to communicate and properly engage in class discussions.

C meets this criterion since she sits down will other teachers and the families of her students to discuss how to make her classroom the best learning environment. During her lunch breaks, she would talk to the other second grade teachers about the different approaches they have to teaching their students. Every Friday, the teachers will sit down in Mrs. C’s room and exchange advice on how to help students better understand the material of the unit. Mrs. C also set up a parent-teacher conference in order to talk about a student’s classroom behavior in order to have him put more effort into paying attention and doing work. She also makes sure that parents are aware of their children’s work by having them sign students’ planners every time they are assigned homework.
Criterion 2: “The teacher plans and manages instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals” (Pugach, 2009, p.
