Amy Guttmann Analysis

Amy Guttmann refers to democratic education as “states, parents, and professional educators all having important roles to play in cultivating moral character (pg. 42).” Democratic education recognizes parental education, as well as professional authority, and political education. Amy Guttmann believes that democratic education is more about a structured individual. The distribution with authority supports the core value of democracy (pg. 42). She also is very clear that she is for democratic education and supports it. Democratic education means that most people come up with an agreement on what is being taught and how. The parents, students, teachers, and government are the ones that come up with this agreement. An example of democratic education is the agreement of kids going to school. Most parents and students agree that kids should go to school and get an education; the government requires it. Democratic education is used quite often. An example of it being used in almost every school would be children having to learn the basic classes (math, science, reading, writing). In my field experience, democratic education was frequently used. I was in an art classroom and the teacher wanted to choose projects that he knew the kids would enjoy doing. Individual state is when the individual (the student) gets to choose his, or her curriculum. Amy Guttman says it is “to provide every child with an opportunity to choose freely and rationally among the widest range of lives (pg. 34). I think that this compares to democratic education because the child still gets to choose what they want to learn and it gives freedom to that individual; whereas a democratic education includes the teachers, parents and government. The state of individuals is closest to this because there is still freedom to the
