These platforms attract blue collar workers to the party through their policies on labor unions and the welfare state. The welfare state supports a progressive tax system, higher minimum wages, social security, universal health care, public education, and public housing. They also support infrastructure development and government sponsored employment programs in an effort to achieve economic development and job creation, while stimulating private sector job creation. Through these benefits, blue-collar workers receive a better standard of living, thus attracting many to vote for the party. The Democratic Party also “has a significant advantage with women”, whereas ”thirty-seven percent of women affiliate with the Democratic Party “(Fay). The Democratic Party believe that all women should have access to birth control, and support public funding of contraception for poor women. This in turn acts as beacon for drawing new support from the young American woman demographic. In general, “Republicans tend to take a more conservative stand on issues”(What Do Parties Stand For?). This is commonly known as the conservative side. Republicans stand for a smaller government and a non-secular view on social issues. Republicans think that government should stay out of people's lives and practice a hands off economic policy whereas there little to no regulations placed on small and large businesses. Demographics of supporters include “white and religious, for example white evangelical millennials , who split 70/19 for the GOP.” (Blake). Also, “mormon and evangelical sub-groups account for the rest of the top eight, too, until you get to men from the Silent Generation, who split 60/31 Republican, and a three-way tie to round out the top 10 between white married men, white male parents and whites from the South Central region which include states Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas” (Blake). Evangelicals tend to show their support to the Republican party because of the republicans ideals on the current social issues. These issues that draw republican resistance include gay marriage, transexual rights, legalization of marijuana, and abortion. Gay marriage, trasnexual rights, legalization of marijuana, and abortion count as religious sins to evangelicals. This in turn triggers the
