Democracy: The Importance Of Voting In The United States

In a country where Democracy is prominent, those who vote can ensure that their voices will be heard. However, many Americans today are still unlikely to cast a ballot on election day. The voter turnout in the 2012 U.S. Presidential election (as seen in the graph) was the lowest it has been in the past decade, with only about fifty-four percent of the eligible voter population casting ballots. Some of the top reasons Americans gave for not voting was that they were uninterested, it’s inconvenient, or that the candidates are irrelevant. By voting, you are making your voice heard and registering your opinion on how you think the government should operate, which is why everyone should vote. The importance of voting and democracy dates back to the time of Ancient Greece. Invented in Athens, Democracy came from the word “demos” which meant “power of the people”. In the past, voting was only limited to white men who owned land. Slaves and women were not allowed to vote and therefore were oppressed and could not voice their opinions on any political matter. Our ancestors fought for our 15th and 19th amendment, which states: “vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” and “vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” (The U.S. Constitution Amendment 15 and 19). Many people in other countries cannot vote and some die everyday fighting for this great cause. Even more importantly, men and women over the years have sacrificed everything to ensure that the United States continues to have this freedom. Voting helps determine who will shape the policies of the U.S. now and in the future. Voting is one way you, your neighbors, family, and friends can advocate for our country.
