I struggled with Michael Warner’s “New English Sodom.” It was an interesting read, but it was hard to follow at several point, but the big takeaway that I got from it, is that, Sodom had not always had the sexual connotations that it has today, but rather that it was often employed in the rhetoric of collective judgement or punishment. England was compared to Sodom by Puritans who later moved to the United States, because they were both seen as degenerate and in need of condemnation and punishment. I found this incredibly interesting because Sodom is not alluded to for these purposes today, at least in my experience. Sodom and sodomy, tend to have legal air to them (as well as religious, of course), because of anti-sodomy laws.…

This mentality also explains why women and men are expected to behave the way they do in the novel. Women are portrayed as weak, powerless, live a sedentary life and should always take care of their husband while, in the other hand, men are expected to defend their honor at any cost and, if financially stable, can marry whoever they want to.…

In the novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, he enforces the theme of gender roles throughout the entire novel. Men and women were placed in different social roles and were expected to accomplish and do certain tasks. Men were culturally defined to be masculine and to be the “man” of the house. This meant that females were expected to fulfil their desires. This is shown when Dina Flor was introduced to the story, “Divina Flor [...] knew that she was destined for Santiago Nasar's furtive bed, and that idea brought out a premature anxiety in her” (Marquez 10).…
