For my public figure with a psychological disorder I chose singer, songwriter, recording artist and actress Demi Lovato. The singer has struggled with anorexia, bulimia and bipolar depression disorder over the years. Seeing that Demi Lovato has struggled with a few disorders I will just focus on her bipolar depression disorder which is characterized as mood shifts that make it difficult to function on a day to day basis. With the disorder depression symptoms could be feeling sad, low energy, low motivation, or loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities. Demi Lovato says that before she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder people would just tell her that she was depressed but she didn’t know why and she would have random episodes of “mania”, she says in Women’s Health magazine “For years, people said …show more content…
During these manic periods Demi Lovato said she would stay up until 5 a.m and write sevens songs in one night. Since she didn’t know what was behind her behavior she says in Women’s Health magazine that, "When you don’t know what’s happening, why you’re feeling certain ways, and you don’t have the answers yet, people tend to self-medicate, which is exactly what I did.” In 2010 she spent time in a treatment center for her anorexia and bulimia and after in 2011 she finally went to a doctor and got diagnosed with the mental illness. She says that bipolar depression really had gotten her life off track but, she says that she wants everyone to know and that is struggling with bipolar depression that, with getting that right diagnosis, the right education, support and finding the right treatment plan you can live a healthy and beautiful life learning how to deal with the disorder. Demi Lovato has had a very public role in the face of raising awareness for her mental illness as well as raising awareness for the advocacy of stopping the shaming of all mental
