It takes a way a person’s ability to carry on with normal daily tasks. This disorder consists of mood episodes, both severe in their opposing ways. A manic episode causes one to be overly joyful or excited, taking on a lot of activities and not sleeping. A depressive episode causes one to be extremely sad and feel hopeless, usually accompanied by suicidal thoughts and loss of energy (MayoClinic). This disorder can make someone’s relationships with family and friends suffer, and school work can plummet. Environmental factors play a huge role in a person’s development of bipolar disorder based on stress, loss, or traumatic experiences like bullying (NIH). Bipolar patients are treated with Lithium, a mood stabilizer that is taken while carefully monitoring blood levels to maintain organ function (NIH). Common with many mental disorders, abuse and bullying are present in many events and experiences during adolescent life. “Every major cause of bipolar disorder can be related to bullying. All acts of bullying are serious risks for suicidal thought, substance abuse, and mental health disorders” (BDC). Bullying can severely affect a young child’s mental health in many different ways. First, is puts an underdeveloped brain under an overwhelming amount of stress. Feelings of fear, anxiety, and panic negatively impact the chemical balance, which in turn leads to depression, more anxiety, and ultimately bipolar disorder or other personality disorders (BDC). Unfortunately, this situation only becomes more serious the longer it is unaddressed. “The stress of being bullied as a young child can continue to trigger depressive or manic episodes until an individual seeks help” (BDC). Lastly, adolescents with early bipolar disorder who are victims of bullying can become bullies themselves. They have difficulty controlling their emotions, which can “further contribute to aggression and severe violence”
