In this myth there is a destruction of innocence and the earth’s natural beauty due to the removal of Persephone for four months which causes Demeter to act rashly. Demeter also exemplifies kindness when offering immortality to Metaneira son. This Kindness was rarely seen in mythology towards mortals since they never demonstrated anything that would show they deserved to be immortal such like the Gods.

The purpose of this myth was to show that the word of a deity was very sacred and most be followed, if not there will be severe consequences such like Penthus, who refused to follow Dionysus word. The myth is important because it shows the power of a God/Goddess and that no-one is able to escape their wrath. Themes in the Myth

The authority of powerful mortals and/or immortals. These Greek Gods believed that their word was final and nothing should be said against it, if not vengeance will ensue. Resurrection is also featured in this story when Dionysus brings back his mother from the underworld. Resurrection is an act commonly found in mythology since many of the gods had the ability to go to the underworld and retrieve people.
