A type of brain protein clumps together and causes damage with it’s fibrils and then causes solid deposits. In Alzheimer’s the proteins include amyloid-beta and tau but in others it can be other proteins. These deposits increase your risk and damage to the brain. Some treatments are being developed to look at addressing this aspect of Dementia.
2) Immune changes and inflammation have been shown to impact the brain’s health. We have microglia that manage our synaptic connections and cut the connections we don’t need, however these become more active as they age and can be overactive. Inflammation is known to trigger this response.
3) Issues in other body systems such as hi BP, CHD and diabetes can also increase the risk of dementia. Risk can be reduced by decreasing stress, and making healthy lifestyle changes.
4) Another neuroscientifically important issue with Dementia is the use of any drug that might supress AcetylCholine (ACh).These increase risk of dementia as they damage the synchronisation of the brain cells by deep brain nuclei, that use
