The Big Muddy It is the longest river in all of North America and the fourth longest in the World. It runs through a total of 31 different states and 2 Canadian provinces. The river has served as a main route of transportation and trade throughout the history of the U.S. as well as a border and a communication route. I’ve been to the Mississippi in Minnesota and Missouri and it is a big, muddy, slow moving river with about as much history as a river can have. Now in the book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which is one of the greatest pieces of text in all of American literature, ever!…
Language features in once. In the novel once Morris Gleitzman portrays Felix as a caring character because he cares for Zelda his new friend and the orphans by telling them stories from his imagination. On page 66 Morris Gleitzman writes about how Felix was caring towards Zelda “Once I spent about six hours telling stories to Zelda, to keep her spirits up-” clearly Morris is telling us that Felix obviously cares about her and doesn’t want Zelda to feel down in the dumps. Keep in mind that Zelda does not know her parents are no longer alive but Felix does, so trying to save Zelda from the heartache is also another example of how caring Felix is.…
You should always make the choice that feels right to you. When you make decisions you should trust your instincts. Eli the main character from, The Compound, written by S.A. Bodeen, did this well. He knew his dad was trying to hide something from him. When he started finding clues in his dad´s office, he started to realize his dad has been keeping secrets from his own family for the last six years while they were in the compound.…

The main characters from Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall and Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai are both very similar and very different. Lupita,, the main character from Under the Mesquite, is a Mexican American girl who has to go through the struggles of her mother dying and being accused of trying to shy away from her heritage. Hà, the main character from Inside Out and Back Again, is a Vietnamese girl who has to deal with not knowing where her father is and is made fun of for being “different”. In the following paragraphs, I will compare and contrast the similarities in their appearance and character, family, and challenges. First of all, Hà and Lupita have similarities and differences in appearance and character.…
Adverse, confusing, hopeless-they're all words that describe Nevaeh Anderson's life despite her wealthy upbringing. She has a mile long list of all the boyfriends she's had, she has smoked and drank numerous times, and she has woken up in too many strangers' beds. To top it all off, she's only 17. Her mother is too busy battling her own demons to scold her, and her father is too caught up in his work to notice that she's falling over the edge.…
Progression of Nic’s Substance Use While reading the book, I noticed that Nic and his family were living a hectic life. When he first gets back home from school after evidently not using any drugs while he was away, he is perfectly fine. Nic is associating with his family, he appears to be cheerful and all around involved. He plays with his siblings and even connects with family companions. Nic makes it seem as though he is truly attempting to on the road to recovery and begins to ask to use the car to go to AA gatherings and to meet with his new sponsor.…
In the book Under the Persimmon Tree, Najmah had encountered various dangerous threats to her life, but she managed to fight through it, and become a fearless machine that’s only purpose was to save her family from falling. She also feels that she needs to take back what she believes is hers. The character Najmah had gone through many experiences that changed her drastically from how she was before.…
A Not-So-Silver Lining The stigma of mental illness is as follows: crazy eyes, a lot of violence, mood swings every two seconds, and not a lot of friends and family to help. But, there are multiple factors and explanations for why a person is the way they are, and why they developed the mental illness that they did. Pat Solitano, a middle-aged white man with a lot of great qualities, was a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He had a wife, a great job as a high school history teacher, and was living comfortably in the middle class.…
Going though Sedita’s eight characters it was hard for me to pin point some people in my family as only one character. Some people in my family I believe highly resemble two to three characters. However, I broke it down to who the characters are the majority of the time. The first character, The Logical Smart One, I pinpointed as my dad.…
A Village to Raise a Child “Help me, Mama. I need you to help me.” “It’s too late for that, the woman said. You got yourself into this, you can just get out of it” (Haruf 10). Parents are a main source of comfort and care for children.…
College students are introduced into the new world upon graduating with only a hint of guidance and structure. Upon reading The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, I realized that, like college students, the main characters were inserted into a world unfamiliar to their own. Weeks utilizes multiple viewpoints throughout the novel as they travel through foreign territory. Each character faces their own set of challenges and problems that they must resolve throughout the story. Many of the issues met by the characters may include; learning of their tragic past, making the right decisions, or grasping at a better understanding of the world around them.…

In the book " Going Solo " there are many characters to meet some are alike and different. Well, the two characters that I found interesting is Mdisho and Miss Trefusis. Miss Trefusis and Mdisho are both dotty, but they come from different backgrounds. Meaning that Mdisho comes from a tribe of warriors. While Miss Trefusis is being a rich woman probably from somewhere of high quality.…
V. Little by little, Zitkala Ša consciously and unconsciously changes into a tamer individual, one that is generally less happy. After seeing a depiction of the devil for the first time, Zitkala Ša has a dream. She describes this dream, noting, “Once again I seemed to be in my mother’s cottage. An Indian woman had come to visit my mother” (94). Here, she describes a visitor in her home as “Indian” using the white term for her race.…
