The airline industry is one that is highly competitive and challenging. In 2005, Delta filed for bankruptcy protection. However, it managed to emerge out of it. Delta realized that in order to gain success in this industry, they had to fix their business and operating model. In a business, one is often faced with opportunities and challenges. However, a business has to know how to leverage aspects such big data, analytics and visualization technologies because these are the things that will move a business forward and help within the competitive market (Turban, Volonino, & Wood, 2015, p. 2). In the past, this process of baggage handling was a manual operation. Therefore, the percentage rate of mishandled baggage was extensively high at the company. As a result, customers were not satisfied. To improve their customers experience, Delta operations team at their various airports decided to investigate the matter. Once they identified the causes, they came up with an effective solution to combat the problem. Delta implemented the RFID system. This system allows customers to track their luggage via their mobile devices by using the Delta app or their website. Delta is the first to use this system. According to Silk (2016), “When Delta finishes installing this system, it plans to enhance that feature with push notifications that tell passengers when their bags make it on the plane and when they can expect them to be delivered to baggage claim” (para. 20). Because this system uses radio frequency, employees will also be able to reroute baggage in the case that a person happens to miss their flight. Customers use this system by first taking a photo of their baggage then tracking their baggage via the app even if their baggage is not on the same flight. Due to this system, customers are able to relax more because they are aware of where their baggage is located. Wheel tracking has become one of the issues prevalent in the airline industry. It can also be a very time-consuming process. This is because taking inventory on wheels can last for hours. Delta has a new redesigned RFID AeroTrack system to deal with this situation. “If a particular type of wheel is needed, the database can tell you exactly where it is stored and the handheld reader can help the mechanic locate it precisely” (“Aircraft Wheel,” n.d.). Therefore, a mechanic does not need to go through the hassle of removing numerous tires to find the right one or go to various locations just to find a specific wheel.
