Section 4 Assignment.
1. The pros for an airline that require heavier passengers to purchase an additional seat are:
• Safety standards are adhered to. If a passenger who is heavier is not able to buckle their seat belts or lower their armrest it becomes a safety hazard for which the airline can be held liable. The size and weight restrictions may also come into play. Will the seat collapse under the pressure of the passenger’s weight? This is also a liability
• Average sized passengers will be happy. It will not be a good practice on the airlines part to make other customers uncomfortable. Personally, I would not be too happy if I paid for my seat and be uncomfortable because the person occupying the seat beside me is encroaching on my seat.
• A heavier passenger will be more comfortable if an extra seat is purchased
The cons are:
• Some people may see this as a form of discrimination.
• Heavier passengers may refuse to use the airline.
• Asking heavier passengers to purchase an additional seat may not be the politically correct

In order to counteract the high costs of obese employees companies can encourage employees to lose weight. They can be educated about eating healthy and the benefits of exercise. They can also be educated about the many health risks that come with being obese. Some companies offer a lower insurance rate to non-smoking employees the same can be offered to obese employees who are willing to take steps to become healthy. A lot of companies sponsor competitions and challenges for employees to lose weight; various exercise groups are formed, for example, if an employee would prefer exercising outdoors as opposed to indoors there are programs geared to this. If yoga is popular among the employees there is a yoga group, or there may be an aerobics group. These group efforts tend to be successful because the individual is with others like themselves and each acts as a motivator to the

The argument that seat-belts can increase our safety, potentially save lives and therefore any wise individual should take precaution and buckle up is a valid one, but by making this a mandatory law, we are in essence opening the door for our government to further infringe upon our right to decide what we will or will not individually do to insure our personal well-being. Could government regulation of food consumption come next, with fines for those who overeat and put themselves at far greater risk for disease and heart attacks. This too could indeed save lives. We must be cognizant of the broader statements we make when we allow the passage of laws that open the door to cutting our personal liberties that were so valiantly fought for and…

I am writing in order to analyze Radley Balko’s “What You Eat is Your Business” and determine whether or not it is suitable for publication in The Shorthorn. The piece responds to a summit being hosted by Time magazine and NBC News on the issue on obesity and public health being standardized legally and economically by the government. After analyzing the piece I have reached that it would be very compelling article for the readers of The Shorthorn and would recommend publication because of Balko’s expertise, the compelling nature of the issue, and good sources of information used in the text. Balko is a policy analyst for the CATO Institute a public policy organization located in Washington D.C.…

Air travel is nowhere near comfortable. A message from Dr. Florence Thomson written in response to an article published in The British Medical Journal in 1953 was, “most passengers are quite unable to rest in comfort in the position allowed, and sleep is quite impossible except in very short snatches” (996). In 2016, nothing changed for the better in this regard; CNN recently published an article about the disruptive passengers in flights and incidents of air rage in airplanes (McKirdy). What did change significantly is what comes before boarding the airplane. It has been 15 years since that horrifying day in September 2001.…

Two of the main reasons why individuals travel are directly reliant on the state of the economy. This directly affects its stakeholders because the majority of them can benefit from a growing economy or suffer through recessions and slow economic periods. Politics play a role in regulating and mandating certain safety precautions. Unfortunately, airline industries are met with sharp opposition and criticism for various expansion projects and other controversial practices. Source 1:…

While she offers highly trustworthy opinions from a Yale professor as well as a Harvard professor on “disadvantages that overweight individuals suffer” in paragraph 9, she neglects to explore the employer’s point of view and why hiring her would have been a risk to their particular company. To bring this view to light, “Prohibited Employment Policies/Practices” as enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee, clearly states that “it is not illegal under federal law for an employer to limit opportunity due to height and weight if the employer can demonstrate how the need is job related. (Prohibited Employment Policies) This would then address why the company claimed, she was “unfit to evacuate the bus in the event of an accident” at the end of paragraph 3. This was quite a valid…

Services available and Health Promotion Health Promotion plays an important role in providing ways to tackle obesity. Providing appropriate information may help to educate not only a target group of people but a whole society. NICE (2014) provides guidance regarding obesity assessment and management and also prevention. The Government has recognised the importance of promoting health regarding obesity by developing an advice-giving role in front-line health professionals such as General Practitioners or pharmacies (that usually lack confidence to promote health) by providing appropriate information to help patients to access the health services available in order to make lifestyle changes needed (food choice and exercise)(Faculty of Public Health FPH2008).…
