Delphine argued that today American Indians are allowing their own traditions to prosper once again through language revitalization efforts. The presentation took place in room 101A in the University Student Union on Monday, October 19, 2015.
Delphine presented on the works of Ella Deloria, and then she talked about the work and studies of her own. Ella Deloria was an Anthropologist, educator, linguist, and translator. Ella wrote Dakota texts and did large amounts of translating for other scholars studying and publishing works on the Native American stories and languages. Ella Deloria identified two categories in Dakota Texts, the oldest stories and the stories regarded as true. In both categories the element “supernatural” is ever present and Delphine emphasized how the supernatural part is very important in Lakota language and culture. Once the speaker gives the audience some background information and starts getting into the topic and why they are speaking on that topic it becomes more comprehendible and understandable. Delphine Red Shirt gave a good overview of the history and past studies of the Lakota language. In the amount of time given it would be difficult to go over all the people involved and their contribution to the translation of Lakota language and stories. After that Delphine did a fine job of describing the importance of language in general and the language of the Native Americans. I found it interesting when she said “you can not really get at the heart of a people without knowing their language.” This totally made sense to me because without knowing a person’s language or how to speak with them you feel distant from them. If you know their language you can know something about their culture and history. The only thing that I noticed that would help the presentation was the slideshow. There were a lot of spacing and grammatical errors. This is understandable because translating is difficult and English is her second language but someone should have proof read the
