Guido d’Arezzo was an Italian Benedictine Monk born in France in the century year of 995. Guido was not a composer during this time, instead he was a musical therapist and teacher. Although he was not a composer, Guido made the discovery of a new form of music notation after moving to Italy where he also worked for Bishop Theobald, despite the fact that he was a music therapist and teacher ("GUIDO D'AREZZO"). The plainchant and organum music was very interesting to listen to because I could easily distinguish if the music was monophonic or polyphonic. Moreover, it was very pleasant, relaxing, and delightful to listen to. In the hymn “Pange Lingua” I heard at least two different rhythms in the song. The organum music was more favorable to listen to because it was polyphony, more similar to the music that I like. In comparison with a type of music that I listen to hip hop and pop music differs a lot with the liturgical music.…

When I first started listening to this piece, Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, “The Lark,” I was surprised by how familiar it sounded to me. I think it is well known, and has a distinct section that repeats multiple times throughout the piece, which is very well known. The strings often build up with one another to create a type of tension and anticipation throughout the movement. The piece appears to be written in ABA form, thus the listener has a clear idea of where the piece is going while listening to it.…

Point 1: (Snowden and Teie pp 133-135) “Music, as we know it, is a human construct made by and for humans based on our species’ developmental experience, vocalizations, perceptions, and cognition, but that music might have had its evolutionary origins in emotional communication in other species.” Music, for the most part, is a man-made concept. The music that humans make are created with humans as the specified audience— Our music only really appeals to other human beings, as it can elicit certain emotions and responses unique to human life. Thus, “[a] major issue of testing animals with music composed for humans is that tempos and pitch ranges of human music may not be relevant for another species. There may also be species typical ways of expressing different emotional states.”…
