In the book “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose,” Tony Hsieh shares interesting lessons learned from his journey as an entrepreneur ranging from starting a worm farm as a kid, running a pizza business, creating a successful tech start-up Link Exchange, running a investment fund, and building Zappos to deliver happiness. I learned many valuable lessons from the book regarding the importance of following passion, taking risks, thinking outside the box, evaluating market opportunities,focusing on culture, building relationships, and sharing and experimenting ideas. Tony discusses many similarities between poker and business and offers suggestions on evaluating market opportunities, marketing, creating branding, and formulating strategies. Industry and market selection is the most important decision in business just like table selection in poker game. Sometimes entrepreneurs might realize that they are in the wrong market or the market is not big enough, and it will be the best to switch market. Mostly businesses need to focus on long term and plan how to meet customers’ needs. Tony says, “Go for positive expected value, not what’s least risky. Make sure your bankroll is large enough for the game you’re playing and the risks you’re taking. Play only with what you can afford to lose. Tony provides valuable insights on becoming a successful entrepreneurship and presents in a funny way to readers. I am inspired to follow my passion, take risks, think outside the box, and think about the culture of my business idea. I feel that if Tony can put it all together and turn the idea of happiness into a multi-billion dollar company, i can also think about building a startup applying the ideas.
