Ted Kooser, author of Delights & Shadows is an awarding winning poet whom received the Pulitzer Prize. Kooser has written approximately ten books that contain collections of poems and is widely praised for the style in which he writes his poems (Kooser, About the Author, 2016). He uses a number of literary devices to illustrate a clear image for his audience and creates beauty out of the ordinary. Kooser shares a series of stories that someone once experienced allowing for a reflection. The poems in Delights & Shadows are filled with small detail, significant enough to assist the reader in portraying the larger image while focusing on the style and diction expressed. Each individual poem contributes to the unity of the collection as a whole.

The author is content and has accepted the fact that his father is no longer alive. In lines three and four the author makes a statement that explains how his family would be miserable if their father was still alive; it was easier to let him go than to keep here while he was suffering (Kooser, Father, 2016).
