Imagine a time when you could not pass you ELWR even after three tries because you had no focus and gave up every time you failed. This is likely the result of not applying non-cognitive and character skills. Non-cognitive skills are skills such as flow and deliberate practice. Furthermore, a major character skills if applied to improve on a goal is growth mindset. If these skills are applied towards writing, it can progress us towards becoming better writer. Although non-cognitive and character skills could be applied to become a better writer, applying such skills would not be possible if you gave up after failure. I believe to become improve on anything in relating to writing we must fail or learn from our mistakes. After we failing and …show more content…
Deliberate entails more than just being able to practice and keep practicing. For example, in the article “ A Star is Born” by Dubner and Levitt, suggests us that to become better at something, it is much more than having the right genes, it is also making sure that you are constantly practicing with purpose. Although we say practice makes perfect, it is not always the case because practicing without purpose leads to very little success. This is where deliberate practice plays a large role in achieving mastery. Deliberate practice is practicing with the intention of getting feedback from peers, setting achievable goals and lastly have the right concentration. For example, the authors informs, “ Deliberate practice entails more than simply repeating a task - playing a C - minor scale 100 times, for instance, or hitting tennis serves until you shoulder pops out of its socket. Rather, it involves setting specific goals, obtaining immediate feedback and concentrating as much on technique as an outcome”. Clearly practicing without intention is the not the right path towards achieving success but applying non-cognitive skill like deliberate practice, can not only reach you towards success but also mastery. This is because deliberate practice entails more than achieving mastery in one element but on every element of the goal through continuous practice and focus.
