Delia is a young girl in a mystery. She is killed by the gambler; Many singers composes songs for some further meaning to show the social condition of that time. The three songs are “Delia” composed by Bob Dylan in 1993, Little Delia composed by Blind Willie McTell in 1932, and “Delia’s Gone” composed by Johnny Cash in 1962. This essay will discuss the similar and different characteristics of Delia among the three songs: “Delia”, “Little Delia”, “Delia’s Gone”. The first difference is that Delia’s roles are similar between “Delia” and “Little Delia” but different from that in “Delia’s Gone”. The second difference is that Delia is innocent in “Delia’s Gone” but not in “Delia” and “Little Delia”. One similarity is that Delia is loved by the singer …show more content…
In “Delia’s Gone”, it focuses on the perspective of the singer, it tells more about what the singer does. However, in the other two songs, they talk about Delia is a gambler, after rounds and rounds, Delia is killed by a gambler. Delia should be responsible for her fault that she gambles all around although the gambler kills her for profit. In “Delia’s gone”, it just talks about the singer’s actions and thoughts. The singer kills Delia because the hate comes out from the love——She does not like him. Nothing else is mentioned in this song. “But she’s one more rounder gone” (McTell 1932). “He shot poor Delia down with a hateful 44” (Dylan 1993). “If I hadn’t have shot poor Delia I’d had her for my wife” (Cash 1962). Delia is dead at last in all three songs, she needs to be responsible for her improper behavior——gambling at a young age. Although it’s not all her fault, the society is messy and the opportunity for her is unsuitable, this makes her fallen in her life. She became a gambler, and she has been already on the way to bad ending because of her wrong choice to gamble all around. So another Similarity is that Delia has been killed in all three songs.
