Unfortunately many U.S. veterans have had trouble seeking care due to delayed health care or unmet needs (Miller, 2013). A most important problem with healthcare is the unusually long wait times according to Miller it takes the average veteran 215 days to file a health claim and an additional 315 days for the claim to processed, most veterans are finding a wait period of two years before being treated (Miller, 2013). There were several barriers in general that specifically predicted delaying or foregoing care, including unaffordable health care, inability to take off from work, transportation barriers, being uninsured, knowledge gaps about VA care, perception that VA providers were not gender sensitive, and military sexual assault history.
