April 1st of 2017 at the University of Delaware was one of the worst days of my life. It was supposed to be one of the best days of my life. I had my first basketball tournament of the season with my new team, and I was so eager to play. I hadn’t played in a game since school season in January, and I was ready to start again.
The first game of the tournament I played very well. Although I only had five points the whole game, my defense was impeccable. My new coach, and teammates were all very impressed with my performance. We won the game by a substantial amount. The director of the tournament wanted to talk to us and gave us an interview and discussed how we thought the tournament would play out for us. It was an enthralling experience!

I had expected there to be an empty court but instead, I would play with a team from a local school. At first, I thought that I would do terrible, but to my surprise, my hard work with the ball paid off. My dribbling skills had gotten much better, and during the two weeks that I practiced with the team, I improved my shot. When we got back home to Atlanta, I continued to practice and for the first time, I beat my friend at on-on-one on Labor Day weekend. Now, I still have one goal remaining.…

With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

In the novel Book of Unknown American, Christina Henriquez brought to light multiple stories of immigrants who betted their lives on a future in the United States. Unfortunately, some did not come to fully realize this future. Instead, the immigrants experienced a rude awakening upon arriving in the United States. Although not as grand a scale as to crossing country borders, I also had betted on false dreams. From rumors to blogs, I dreamed college to be a place of great freedom.…

The sense of family is what I enjoyed most about being part of the hockey team. We all look out for each other and support each other. We focus on the positive. We do not ignore the negative, we address it and move on. We are there for each other during the season as well as the off-season.…

The season was off to a rough start before it even started; our team was very inexperienced because we graduated thirteen seniors and five other players quit. A majority of the players were two so we were starting from square one. Nonetheless, I was optimistic and determined. As the only senior, and one of three upperclassman, I had been playing the longest and was determined that I would be able to lead the team to greatness. I was disappointed when we did not, but I did not let it stop me from trying.…

Even every once in awhile, a lucky guess at your age, weight, or birthday will amaze all the surrounding people.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

We played our hearts out and won every game in the tournament we were named the “KSA Champions”. The accomplishment increased our team’s national ranking, we were now in the top 20 teams in the nation and the number one team in Georgia; the ranking we were now held was the highest in history at my school. It meant a lot to my coaches and teammates, due to the fact we were the only African American team in the tournament. The funny looks that we received and the lack of foul…

I live day to day, going through the works: wake up at the ungodly hour of six A.M., make it through my classes, two hours of volleyball, finally go home, repeat. But, in between all of the rushing, the yelling, the stress of high school, is when I get to relax. It’s when I get to forget about school, or as I call it “college auditions” and when I can just have a nice time without having to weigh the pros and cons of every thing I do. Every day, after the last bell rings, I navigate through the throngs of intimidating upperclassmen. It’s like The Hunger Games, stay calm, keep your head down, and try not to piss anyone off.…
