Their chatting was mostly composed of banter and name-calling, but as I was listening I learned a few terms that I was unfamiliar with. He and his opponent used the words come-up, try-hard and game time. Delanders2k later informed me on what these terms mean. A come-up is when a player who was at first losing starts to win. Literacy and education are the building blocks and ground work of almost everything we accomplish in society. The importance of reading in our education system is crucial so a common question that stems from its importance is how gamers compare in literary development. When it comes to literacy in books and in gaming it comes down to the context of the literature. Gamers that choose faster passed shooters or quite puzzle games are not any more literate then someone who chooses to read the books of “The Cat and the Hat”. There has been research which has shown that there are gamers that excel in literary tasks, but only due to the context of the games they were playing.…

Wright’s arrogance is shown when he simply refuses to use evidence from others and bases an entire topic on his own opinion. Since Wright is trying to persuade non-gamers to change their mindset, using studies and evidence from other’s research would benefit the effect of his article. Although he is a credible source on the topic of video games due to his extravagant release of the Sims, Sim City, and Spore, his position in the gaming market makes his opinion seem highly biased to the audience of non-gamers. In paragraph 3, Wright argues, “[b]ut the gamers’…

Furthermore, the author uses abstract language when describing a scene within a game. For example, the author uses words such as "beautiful" and "ingenious" within his article which allows readers to interpret the meaning based on their values.…

Gaming has become a quick fix for people looking for satisfaction in life. Games satisfy the human desire for epic experiences. Gamers feel overwhelmed with these factors, or emotions when playing games that have larger-than-life depictions. Instead of getting out in the real world to experience something meaningful, gamers are on their phones or computers indulging in a meaningless fictional life. McGonigal states that “Instead of fixing reality, we’ve simply created more and more attractive alternatives to boredom, anxiety, alienation, and meaninglessness we run up against so often in everyday life…

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Like how the addition of sound allowed filmgoers to not just watch the action but hear it, “Every new medium that has been invented … has increased the transporting power of narrative” (Rose, 36). Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…

Prior to the turn of the millennium, video games were practically spat upon by those in “high-art” circles. Seen as mindless time killers, barely worth a mention, they were isolated from discussion for the better part of a quarter century. However, as years passed and technology evolved, the medium as a whole evolved with it. Development tools became more accessible to the masses, providing any person with an idea to tell a story that pushes the boundaries of the medium and of art itself. Despite these clear evolutions, there are still vocal societies that condemn calling a video game ‘art’.…

The gaming community is a culture of its own and it differs greatly depending on where you are in the world. In comparison to America, South Korea’s gaming community seems far more intense in terms of its popularity nationwide. My goal is to discover the factors that contribute to the differences in importance and popularity of video games. I will tackle this by analyzing Korea through Marvin Harris’ theory of cultural materialism to determine how technological and economic components at the base affect the ideals of the country. This will be followed by a comparison of the gaming culture of America and Korea using the theory of cultural relativism to note the differences in a minimally biased way.…

Why have video games become a big success? Back in the early 1900s, people didn’t have video games, they had simple games such as checker and chess. These two games are still widely played, but when computers and televisions started becoming a normal necessity, virtual games became more apparent. The concept of video games started with the first computer game. This game was a version of tic-tac-toe, created in 1952 by A.S. Douglas, a Cambridge university doctoral student (Hile)…

Anime and video games are two subjects that play an important role in both eastern and western popular culture. The ascension of both anime and video games into popular culture originated first in Japan, and eventually their influence spread across the globe. I’ve been engrossed in both subjects since I was young, and I believe my appreciation for both was no coincidence. Anime and video games, after all, have always felt similar to me, but why is that? To answer that question, I will consider what anime is, and what video games are.…

Video Gaming, a Global Phenomenon Technology is a key element in our society and it is here to stay. Preconceived notions have been made about whether or not our pop culture may act as a hindrance in our world.
