Dehumanization: The Use Of Propaganda In The Media

Improved Essays
The use of propaganda in the media is rampant and unhindered by any legislation. Propaganda of any sort can be considered psychological warfare and with this being the twenty-first century, needs to be outlawed altogether. It dehumanizes it's subjects with the use of all types of media and preys on humans herd mentality. The medias opinions fuel the fire of mass objectification that is propaganda which more often than not will also hurt those within the nation. Despite the fluctuating opinions on propaganda, it is not needed in this century.

Dehumanization can be defined as the psychological process of making the enemy seem less than human. Thus detaching people from the horrible actions made against this 'enemy'. In World War Two there was a famous poster picturing a Nazi as a gorilla, holding what is assumed to be Lady Liberty, this imagery obviously would strike fear and disgust in the minds of the American people towards the German people. However, upon the ending of the war, and the Communist takeover of Germany, the American people began to view these people differently, more like themselves; a war-torn people with little resources left. This is called 'herd mentality' and is when people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviours and thoughts. It is a very useful tool in propaganda, used even now. Though it seems subtle, Priminister Steven Harper passed a legislation making it illegal to wear a Niquab. Now this may not seem like much, but when paired with his actions against Syrian refugees it is clear he is propagating that Muslim people are not welcome in Canada. I am a firm believer that the culture, beliefs, and attitude of minorities, specifically Latinos and African Americans built the United States of America. It breaks my heart to see that the world that we build we have such little involvement in. In the media, we, African-Americans, are mentioned in a negative way 99.9% of the time. I feel as though this has much to do with the fact that most media outlets are run by white people. Continuing to diversify the numbers in the media will help to limit the negative representation of minorities in the media.…

One of the most important details of my event was the impact of society and representation. Like said before, I got criticized for my hair for being natural, I was mindful of this on my journey, because of what I had seen and heard from the media and society. The media's depiction of black women is of false representation and my goal was to show my bravery and confidence, as well as healthy hair. Nothing is wrong or ugly about natural kinky hair, people think this way because of the television, magazines, and advertisements promoting products depicting black women with silky, straight hair. Hair is not healthy when it is straightened or relaxed, it is more like making it stressed instead of relaxed.…

When a young woman looks at the cover of an American magazine, what does she often see? A tall, unusually thin, white woman. This is what many Americans consider beauty. In order for a women to be deemed beautiful, to most, she must be thin with blonde hair and blue eyes, and if she’s black, she has to be brighter than the sun and have straight long hair to fit the “white perspective”. These messages about body images are everywhere, not just in magazines.…

While growing up in a white, male dominated, heterosexual society I sometimes struggle to find comfort in being a woman. Even though I’m from an affluent, privileged neighborhood, I feel uncomfortable walking home late at night, putting my drink down at a party, or being with a group of female friends, unescorted by a man. Not only is protecting myself an issue, but I also struggle to balance the social pressures of “skinny” vs. “curvy,” and “bitchy” vs. “sweetheart.” Women have been fighting these social structures for generations, yet still feel objectified, unsafe and marginalized.…

When it comes to the types of media that influence society’s perception of hate crimes the main one is the Internet which is also known as the Net. This can be narrowed down to social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. These hate crimes can be seen on TV or read in newspapers, but the majority of people see them on the Internet. The promotion of hatred is widespread, and the Internet is a relatively cheap and accessible means of connecting similarly minded people across the world and coalescing their belief system. The Net is a sophisticated tool for recruitment and unification because it provides links between hate movements that were previously diverse or fractured and facilitates the creation of a collective identity and empowering…

Propaganda is information specifically designed to persuade or mislead, and censorship is the suppression of information deemed objectionable. Although both are just tools, censorship and propaganda are not justifiable in any free society because their entire purpose is to blind and control. No matter what form it takes, propaganda is a tool used to control the citizens of a society. It’s dangerous because it works. In Germany, women were granted the right to vote in 1918.…

The issue of race in America has been a prominent issue for years. In the United States, whites have historically been associated with superiority and privilege while other citizens who do not share the same skin tone are plagued to be categorized as an inferior “other”. Minorities have to constantly deal with the issue of racism in the predominantly white country. Though the society has made great progress in dealing with racial discrimination but the issue of injustice, inequality and stereotyping still remains especially in the media.
