The siege of Sarajevo, the longest in the history of modern warfare, began on April 5th 1992 and ended on February 29th 1996. During the four years, the politically motivated Army of Republika Srpska, under the command of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, dropped an average of 377 shells every single day causing damage to over 64% of the buildings and over 100,000 apartments. The Bosnian Serb army also used the hills surrounding Sarajevo to its advantage by placing snipers there who targeted innocent civilians including children, elderly and women. The siege ended in 1996 after the intervention of the United Nations and The NATO, which forced the Bosnian Serb Army to declare ceasefire. However, the once beautifully diverse city of Sarajevo…

Human beings are made up of an array of qualities. Dehumanization is the process of depriving humans of their qualities, to make them feel and/or behave like they are less than what they are. Humans are capable of recalling memories, and many times, incapable of forgetting them because some experiences can make them unrecognizable. In Night by Elie Wiesel, the Nazis dehumanized the Jewish people through too many traumatic ways that leave them with nothing but suffer and numbness. Nazi methods physically, emotionally, and mentally torment these innocent people.…

The Dehumanization of Jews by Hitler and the Nazi Regime Hitler and his Nazi regime used effective tactics to dehumanize and degrade the Jewish people, and reduced them to nothing but small beings that they could then rid themselves of. Some of these tactics were small, and some of the tactics were large. No matter the size, all of these tactics were completely inhumane and horrifying. Sadly, they also all took place in the book Night, by Elie Wiesel. His memoir can attest to how dehumanization occurred, and how it helped Hitler achieve his goal; The Final Solution.…

“One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one” (Agatha Christie). To begin, this quote exemplifies how soldiers are left with the feeling that war solves nothing since the events haunt them through their disabilities. Soldiers are left with a permanent impression on their lives through the injuries they experience from war, like the loss of a limb or nightmares of such tragic events that would scare even the most intrepid(1) soldier. By the same token, this quote illustrates soldiers who are faced with the distress and longing desires to flee from the trauma which they have encountered during their service. The death of those they have fought with, cried with, and faced…

Dehumanization is the psychological or physical process of degrading the targeted group, making them seem less than human and hence not worthy of humane treatment. Dehumanization can lead to increased violence, human rights violations, war crimes, and genocide. Dehumanization is prevalent in almost every case of genocide, the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide are two very good examples. Jews in the Holocaust were treated as subhuman and murder so germans would benefit. The Hutus were dehumanized and killed so Tutsis could prove superiority and gain power in Rwanda.…

Holocaust victims are physically dehumanized everyday while in the concentration camps, however Elie Wiesel was not affected by this treatment. To begin with many prisoners go “Days without food or water” (Wiesel 95). Prisoners are not even given rations while taking long journeys but when they are given rations it is only a piece of bread and a cup of water. The ration is enough to keep them alive but not enough to nurture them. Along with that “…began to devour it.…
