Golding makes Jack, Ralph and Simon walk around the island discovering what the island may have to offer them: “They heard the noises-squeaking-and the hard strike of hoofs on the path [...] The three boys rushed over and Jack drew his knife again with flourish. He raised his arm in the air. [...] Then the piglet tore loose.” ( Golding page 31). In that quote, the boys being Jack, Ralph and Simon hear a noise which ends up to be a piglet caught in the vines or “creepers” of the island, Jack then goes to strike at the piglet with his knife and kill it. Jack ends up getting cold feet and freezes with the knife in hand letting the piglet get away. By Golding making Jack stop himself from being able to kill the pig show that civilization still has control over the character(s), and by the end of the chapter Golding makes the character have start going against the reasoning and control humanity and civilization
