Dehumanization In Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis

In the short story The Metamorphosis Gregor wakes to find he has turned into a huge bug. As the story progresses, bit by bit Gregor loses the qualities that make him human. I believe this dehumanizing process started as he started realizing he could not do things he would normally do. The first example is when Gregor could not sleep on his side as he was accustomed to. “this proved utterly impossible, for it was his habit to sleep on his right side, and in his present state he was unable to assume this position. No matter how forcefully he thrust himself onto his side, he kept rolling back. Perhaps a hundred times he attempted it, closing his eyes so as not to have to see those struggling legs, and relented only when he began to feel a faint dull ache in his side, unlike anything he’d …show more content…
To me Gregor’s transformation does not start becoming real until he himself, realizes he cannot do things people often take for granite.
Gregor’s dehumanization did not stop at the realization he could no longer sleep on his side. In fact, coming to this realization was just the beginning of the dehumanization process. The next phase of Gregor’s dehumanization occurred when his boss and family finally got a look at him, and treated him like a giant bug instead of a human. Resulting in Gregor’s confinement to his room, and his complete separation for mankind. Upon seeing Gregor, his boss fled in terror. Gregor’s mother climbed furniture in hopes of escape. Then, Gregor’s father corralled Gregor towards his room like an animal. When Gregor became stuck in the door his father, “administered a powerful shove from behind, a genuinely liberating thrust that sent him flying, bleeding profusely, into the far reaches of his room. The door was banged shut with the stick, and then at last all was still.” (Kafka, 1915, p. 1890). The next stage is marked by growing resentment for his imprisonment and his family’s neglectful care. One morning, Gregor wakes up to find that he has been transformed into a bug, and his family’s greatest fears are met. Normally, people would analyze Kafka’s work and find that Kafka illustrates the unfortunate and difficult decisions between caring for a family member that is in trouble, or leaving them to their own devices. But what if someone thought that Gregor was never human at all, but just a slave blindly working to support his family without any recognition at all. Throughout The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka the main characters change greatly, though Gregor’s father stood out the most. He progresses and regresses as the story continues, but it’s the almost immediate transformation aside from Gregor; He becomes violent, changes his attitude of life itself, and completely abandons Gregor. Gregor’s father beats down on the door and is curious as to why his son didn’t get up for work that morning (Kafka, pg. 16). Gregor had gone to work every day, he had done everything right so it was no wonder why everyone became so demented about the situation.…

His physical transformation is not only a threat for his household, but also disgusts his employer, as is evidenced by the reaction of his manager: “The manager burst out with loud “oh!” – it sounded like a rush of wind- and now he could see him standing closest to the door, his hand pressed over his open mouth slowly backing away, as if repulsed by an indivisible and unrelenting force.” (Kafka 788) This toxic situation for Gregor alludes to the ruthlessness of the society and selfishness of his own family. Gregor’s metamorphosis into a “lowly insect” brings to light the stark reality that society and family is unwilling to accept individuals with a sense of self into their…

In the beginning of the story Gregor is described as “squirming” (3) and “shocked to hear his own voice,” (5) which resembles his struggle of finding out who he is because he has turned into what family/society wants him to be. The fact that he is “shocked to hear his own voice” justifies that Gregor is not only confused on he has become, but it exposes the reality that Gregor never voices his concerns on being someone he isn’t. It startles him to realize that he is a prisoner within his own body and can’t figure out who he has become, which Kafka makes the reader feel sympathy for him because of his confusion in his mind. Towards the middle of the story Gregor “inconsistently darted madly” (18) around the room when his father was chasing him, which symbolizes Gregor’s chaotic state of trying to live up to his father’s approval because he “didn’t want to let his family down” (11) and how he feels “useless in his present state” (27). Kafka describes Gregor as “simply happy” when Gregor finds solitude in his own body, which shows that Gregor can accept who he is only in his bug form and doesn’t dwell too heavily on the expectations that has been set before him, which makes him authentic because he doesn’t feel he needs to meet his family’s expectations anymore (32).…

Gregor’s orthodoxy essentially makes him a mindless individual, without any thoughts of his own. Without exploring his own feelings, he is unable to find his identity and continues to lack meaning. “He was a creature of the boss’s, spineless and stupid” (Kafka 12). The mechanized manner of Gregor’s work forces him to sacrifice any chance of individuality he has in order to conform to his boss’s expectations, and therefore the expectations of the capitalistic society. Gregor’s forfeiture of identity and the absence of his purpose are merely results of his submission to society.…
