Our identities aren’t defined by what others make of us, but rather who we strive to become. We as a culture believe we can simply look at a person and undoubtedly place that person into a category whether it be economic status, gender identity, or level of intelligence. While we have grown greatly as a society, however, the everyday struggles we face are far from subdued as with every stride we take something will step in our way. Guided by the wisdom of her mother and the underlying messages that her life experiences have taught her, Nyia Powell is an example of someone who shows we are limitless in our ability to better ourselves.
Raised by a single mother for a while in Missouri and later in Rocky Mount, North Carolina,
