This is experiences occurs when one is ordered to do something. This is the experience of feeling obliged to obey a rule or law due because the ethical sense within you is turned on. This experience relates back to Kant’s ethical theory about duty and obligation (Page 9, ISG). Daniel Ruiz is a good example of someone who ethically responds to the experience of obligation. Daniel’s wife and daughter are dependent upon him and indirectly order him to work so that he can give them a better life. To Daniel it is his duty to work and make money to keep his family safe. There is a moment in the movie when Daniel asks his daughter how she like the new neighbourhood as compared to their old neighbourhood which is referred to as “bad”. This is evidence of the fact that Daniel acknowledges that it is his duty and obligation to work in order to take care of his family. Daniel also deals with the racist and insulting remarks of Jean Cabot. He responds ethically in the situation by ignoring her remarks and fulfilling his duty of changing her locks. It is ethical of Daniel to acknowledge his duties and obligations and fulfill them. He is able to ethically and morally respond to the ethical experience of obligation. His theory focused on how we came to know things. This section of his theory is split into the two categories of Theoretical Reason and Practical Reason. Theoretical reason is how we come to know about the laws of nature that govern our behaviour while practical reason allows us to understand how people make choices. Kant, like Aristotle believes that the good is the aim of life. His theory lists that the three factors needed in order to attain the supreme good are God, Freedom and Immortality. According to deontological ethics the supreme good can also be attained through good will which is the will to do our duty for the sole purpose that it is our duty (Page 14-17 ISG). In “Crash” Daniel exemplifies deontological ethics by knowing how to act ethically with regards to theoretical and practical reason and by fulfilling his duty solely for the reason that it is his duty. It is apparent that Daniel knows that theoretical reason tells us to not fight fire with fire, so practically when he is faced with intense situations or “Fire” he does not fight back in the way an unethical person would because he is ware that it is wrong and what it can lead to. Theoretical reason also tells Daniel that racist people believe that all Hispanic people have certain bad qualities but with practical reason Daniel stays away from said bad qualities as he understands that they are wrong.
