Canadian Women’s Foundation funds various projects across Ontario in partnership with not-for-profit organizations and high school based education and awareness on how to eliminate violence against women (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2013). Some helpful ways to help a family or friend who is in an abusive situation or for an abused women are:
1. Call the Police
2. Call shelter or safe house hotlines
3. Reach out to people you trust such as a family, friends or community organizations
4. Speak to your family physician – they can connect you and get you help
5. Contact a lawyer/advocate – who would provide advice (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2013).
The project objective was to create awareness and a match box size resource card was produced and distributed in schools, doctor office, hospitals, partnering organizations and in the community. It was designed so that a woman could sneak it inside her handbag with being noticed, it had all important contacts that could be used when in need. Over 50,000 of such cards were distributed and the outcome of the project created awareness and education in many communities but one specific immigrant community where women were abused as it was seen as a norm, suddenly the women refused to accept violence and wanted out of the relationships and to move on with their lives with respect and dignity (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2013).
