The novel was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it has come to be seen as a representation of the Jazz Age. The Great Gatsby relates the story of Jay Gatsby as told by Nick Carraway. Jay Gatsby was seen and portrayed as one of the most wealthiest and successful men at the time of his existence. Gatsby was not one to hide his riches either. With his ample income, Gatsby purchased a mansion in West Egg which just so happened to lie on the opposite bay from the old-money East Egg, where Tom and Daisy Buchanan lived. Gatsby held extravagantly magnificent parties at his mansion every so often to get the attention of Daisy, whom he had a romantic past with. While Gatsby was in Europe after fighting in the war, Daisy had sent him a letter telling him of her engagement to Tom Buchanan. Daisy marries Tom instead of waiting for Gatsby because Tom had a greater amount of money and at the time, Gatsby did not. Gatsby recalls Daisy’s attraction to wealth and power so chose to demonstrate both by throwing the large parties at his house as an effort to impress her. People who didn’t know Gatsby personally viewed him as a filthy rich and successful man who just threw parties. In reality, Gatsby was a fraud who only wanted to win Daisy back. Therefore, his success becomes questionable. How was Gatsby successful at all? The truth is, Gatsby was not successful at all. Everything he had done in hopes to win Daisy back failed. He had no friends except for Nick and his death was only seen as the end of a great party for many others. None of the characters in this story had any real sense of morality and selflessness. Instead, this novel portrayed the selfishness and greed of the Jazz
