What’s the definition of Prejudice? Prejudice is a fairly controversial idea, most people think it has more of a passive tone or attitude but many professors and sociologist beg the differ. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, prejudice is “an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics.” Based on the definition of prejudice that was recently stated in Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, we see a variety of characters dealing with prejudice judgement and forms of discrimination. By taking a look at the treatment of the the sickly minded and the darker toned people in To Kill a Mockingbird’s own small town, Maycomb, we can see the victimization of them caused by the prejudice town members.

The neighbor who the pesky kids always fear yet loves causing disruption in their piece, in this case it’s Boo Radley. Boo Radley is seen as the monster whose life seems to be the famous town folklore. Children of the town often described him as "Boo was about six and a half feet tall, ... there was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time"(TKM, 13). Each of them were ridiculed, in humanized and physically and/or mentally wounded constantly because of who they were thought to be and how they were ‘supposed’ to be seen by society. They were victimized and not treated fairly by their own neighbors which led to much damage of the person as a whole. Psychologist Dr. David D. Ireland says “Prejudice by any name—be it preference or ignorance—devalues an entire group of unique and distinctive individuals.” which is exactly what took place in this novel because each of these characters were lovely people at
