Introduction For this assignment, I have been asked, based on the readings for this unit, my independent research, and my own self-reflection, to write a paper that addresses what is my definition of leadership; How important is it to have a definition of leadership; How does my definition support my perspective on the concept of leadership; What is my approach to understanding leadership; Does it start with a definition, or do I simply follow my instincts; What is my definition of management; And what do I see as the differences between leadership and management.

Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience (Jago, 1982)." Understanding of Leadership Based upon my own experience, leadership is a fairly simple concept. This is leading and guiding the activities of another individual or group to accomplish a goal or task. There are a number of leadership styles that leaders use to accomplish this. Kouzes and Posner describes the exemplary qualities of leader as those who model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourages the heart.

Following My Leadership Instincts I have had formal training in management and leadership over many years. At this point, I normally just follow my leadership instincts in getting things done. I usually attempt to lead others out of habit when I think it is necessary.
Leadership Vs Management Management is always Leadership, but Leadership is not always Management. The main difference is that Managers are given the authority and power to lead, whereas Leaders influence others by the power of their behaviors which convinces others to be led.
