Definition of leadership per the dictionary: the action of leading a group of people or an organization/ the state or position of being a leader/the leaders of an organization, country, etc. This definition, as can be expected, is very generic with little substance. What a person can take from this definition defines their leadership style. For me, I look at leadership as promoting individuals’ strengths, and developing their weaknesses. All individuals have great strengths that they use to excel in their career, family life, etc.; but for an individual to not only recognize their weaknesses, but find ways to improve them, can be a challenge. It would be hard to narrow down specific individuals on either side of the leadership spectrum, but what I have learned is what is most important. Leadership qualities that have impacted me the most are being present, a good listener, enforces policy and holds others accountable to that policy, and can get answers for others from using resources. Leaders, who go the extra mile and show compassion in their subordinates, are the ones I admire and can relate to. They have respect, a very key aspect, and get the job done without the expense or burden of others. With that, those individuals are motivated to work for that person. On the flip side, leadership qualities that I have seen that have been detrimental are negativism, disregard for policy, belittle others, poor direction, assuming rank before the maturity to handle that position, and disrespect for others. Unfortunately, these individuals are in our organization. These individuals are here to stay, but exceptional leaders draw the attention of those important and push aside the poor ones. These individuals do eventually are accountable for their actions by either not getting recommended for advancement, disciplinary action, and the extreme, discharged from the Coast Guard. Now, my leadership philosophy is promoting individuals’ strengths, and developing their weaknesses. Promoting strengths is through recognition, by awards or just a casual conversation, employee reviews, challenging projects, providing training opportunities, and having supervisors provide more challenging work. To me, for a person to excel at their strengths is fairly easy, however, developing weaknesses can be a challenge. Individuals sometimes have a hard time advertising or showing their weaknesses. Being a good leader is to recognize those and provide opportunities to excel in those areas. Through mentoring, training opportunities, short and long term goals as main examples, individuals can excel with support. Providing support and encouragement along with opportunity, is a recipe for success. I am committed now, through this course and the materiel provided, to be an even better leader for my people and organization. I will leave this course with a new sense of pride and commitment to carry out through the rest of my
