Definition Of Humor

Improved Essays
The definition of the word joke is: “a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline.” Humor has evolved over time, and everyone’s preference in comedy is valid. However, the word “joke” is starting to become warped. This is referring to offensive jokes.
The world is full of cruelty, horrific crime, and twisted people. A common way to cope with our reality is through comedy, which is why offensive jokes exist. I’m not going to pretend that all offensive jokes are disgusting, because humor is always subjective. One thing that I feel should be improved is how many people fail to realize that their sense of humor isn’t the only kind. I have been personally affected by this. I’m not offended

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

There are plenty of people that can take these offensive comments extremely personally, and are unable to witness the humor in the jokes. I find that joking about these subjects is in a way glorifying them instead of alleviating the issue. So these jokes turn out to be less of a fun joke, and more of a blatant…

The Bible tells us in the last days the love of many will grow cold and the comedian was cold and heartless. As a parent I felt for this child and the stigma attached to the negative words spoken over him. The writer of this editorial like so many others fined the article about Barron Trump and the naming calling tasteless and dishonorable. Adults should be mature enough to raise the bar when it comes to children, we should show respect and honor to others even if we do not like them. I understand comedians make their money by joking and bringing laughter to others however the line should be drawn when the joke becomes distasteful.…

I personally believe that political correctness is a way of certain governmental group’s means to silence and suppress opposition to what they want to be done in America. This is yet another example of how cultures in America can influence a culture. In our country every citizen, man, women or child, is endowed certain inalienable rights. There are quips about excessive force and BLM, but it’s not organically funny because it feels forced versus natural. The joke about AIDS isn’t considered humorous. Peter Ustinov, an English actor, had once said that “comedy is simply a funny way of being serious” (goodreads.com). Comedy is often utilized as a sort of crutch and platform to highlight issues- be it people’s problems, the insane global climate, or to express the absurdity of it all. Great comedians always have a point to make, and George Carlin makes a point to castigate the custom of offering help after the death of someone and the concept of human rights. In George Carlin’s special, “It’s Bad for Ya!” , he utilizes the rhetorical situation, dark humor, and satire to entertain his audience.…

Often I hear older people make racist jokes, in particular Black jokes, at which time I get up, slam down my drink and sigh in disgust, making everyone look at me, and then walk away. I am very fortunate that one side of my family is totally free from prejudice and hatred of any kind toward Blacks or anyone…

In recent discussions of Family Guy, a controversial issue has been whether people should or should not watch the television show. On the one hand, some argue that Family Guy is pure entertainment and that nothing is inappropriate with the show. From this perspective, I find it completely absurd that people actually find it acceptable to engage with such a vulgar show. On the other hand; however, others argue that it is a cruel show that incorporate crude humorless jokes. In the words of James Cornish, one of this view’s main proponents, “…the show’s humor transcends off- colour and decides to be full on offensive for the sake of it” (par. 12).…

Anthony Berteaux pushes how "Provocative humor, such as ones dealing with topics of race and gender politics, can be crass and vulgar, but underlying it must be a context that spurs social dialogue about these respective issues". Today’s comedians are constantly faced with criticism regarding the nature of their jokes. The rules of humour are ever-changing, and it is crucial for a good comedian to know them. A joke about a plane crash may have been a knee-slapper on September 10th, 2001, and a career-ender the next day. But apart from knowing the cultural circumstances which forbid certain jokes and encourage others, a comedian now has to respect people’s feelings, religions, personal choices, dietary habits and about a billion other topics that might insult someone. In fact, it seems that the line between funny and offensive is shifting into a direction when very little of the comical is not considered insulting by at least one person.…
