Definition Essay: What Is Suicide?

What is suicide? What is the correct definition for it? After a long discussion in class, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that suicide is the act of intentionally killing oneself. I’ve had a close friend of mine who attempted suicide. Luckily he didn’t succeed on his first attempt and was finally talked into seeking help. He was a perfectionist and a top A student in his class. But putting that all aside, he was bullied a lot (at school). My friends and I have tried to help him many times, we’ve also helped reach out to his peers and even told his teachers about it, but nothing much happened. He was depressed and would always tell us how he hated school, and how his days has always felt so long. After a long period of being depress, …show more content…
Did they really join to try to kill themselves or did they join to protect their nation knowing that they had a high chance of dying? This was where everyone started to question suicide. Listening to the discussion in class, I totally agree a hundred percent with Liz. Those who join and say “I am doing this for the people and for my nation” still knowing that they may die aren’t suicidal. People who decide to enter because to themselves they think “I’m ready to die” in my opinion are suicidal people. People who join the army already know what they were getting into when they signed up for it. They know they have a 50/50 chance of survival when going into battle. These are two examples that I think are not suicidal. September 11, 2001 (talking in my perspective, sorry if I offend anyone) when it happened, the hijackers who hijacked the airplanes knew that they were going to fly this plane into this building and were going to die. They stated in a video (I can’t recall when and where I watched it) before their death that they were going to die a “good” death. This, in my opinion, is not suicide. People who are willingly and knowingly are going to die is not suicide, they have to “intentionally” do it. Just as the Pentagon attack, I think those who were the attackers, were not attempting suicide, they were just willing to sacrifice themselves for their
