Definition Essay: What Is Love?

What is love? People throw this word around every day, without even knowing the true meaning. According to Oxford dictionary, love is “an intense feeling of deep affection”. To me, this definition is the best way to describe this feeling. However, each person has their own individual meaning of love. Love comes in many different forms. It could be the love you have for a best friend, parent, significant other or even a sport. My love for my mother is totally different from the love I have for my significant other. This is why I think that love cannot be defined with just one definition, but several. Loving someone does not always have to be in a romantic way. My love for my best friend, Karlie, is a love that varies from the others. A love for a best friend is not betrayal. It doesn’t matter what the two of you have went through or fought about, when it comes down to it, the love is still there. The love for your significant other is something people try to find every day. Some are fortunate to find it early. I happen to be one of those people. I met my boyfriend sophomore year during a science project where we were partnered together. The more we hung out, the more we realized we had a lot of stuff in common. I knew this guy was my best friend from the start. Every tough situation I have went through, he has made sure we went through it together. Love in a relationship like this is easy and care free. There hasn’t been one time where I have forced myself to love this special guy because that is not how it should be. I believe I am fortunate enough to see what being “in love” is like this early in my life. Love for a significant other is indescribable.
