I find it impossible to say what makes art [art] for everyone else and can only describe what makes art [art] for me. A simple query on google asking this question will demonstrate there are many theories of what makes art [art] with no definitive definition. Sure many have attempted to define art and there are definitions listed in dictionaries, however, art is different for everyone and a personal choice. This essay is my personal opinion of what I believe, art is. Art to me is an individual and personal expression, something that evokes an internal feeling for the creator to create the piece. Art is a mode for an individual to communicate a message through media of their choosing and their mode of presentation and expression varies substantially, that is acceptable. Art is more than just a painting, sculpture, photograph or drawing, dance, music, etcetera, that meet a set of rules or criteria that are learned in art class or read in books. I do not feel art should be based on certain materials that are used or a specific definable technique. To be art an artist, one must just experience a stimulation or have an idea to create the piece and then create it. …show more content…

The viewer walks in and sees a colorless, expressionless, slouching, macabre form surrounded by dull-colored pillows, but then touches and interacts with the work to find that the slouching arms that once seemed so uninviting were meant to comfort and relax the viewer. This leaves the viewer seeing something different in the form after tactile interaction. It is ultimately the contrast between what the viewer sees and feels that makes There, there an effective work of art. There, there is truly the epitome of art. I personally have a very liberal definition of art: anything that uses a medium to convey meaning or emotion to the beholder.…

The traditional view of art has changed over time just as most things have. Naturally, the act of perception has differed opinions on what society considers as art. Dance, paintings, photography, drawings, music, literature, and sculpting, are what comes to mind when contemplating the aspects of art. The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
