What is the first thing that pops in your head when you hear the word, “Hero?” Do you imagine a buff man wearing tights? Do you imagine a superhero saving kittens from trees? The concept of heroism isn’t only in comic books and stories. In our society, there are heros everywhere. They don’t wear tights, they don’t have superpowers, they aren’t buff. Hero’s are everyday people that have done something for the greater good. A hero is a person who has gone out of their way to help or save something or someone from danger. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a hero as, a person, typically a man who is admired for having courage or having outstanding achievements (Merriam-Webster). In my opinion this book definition is wrong, because heroes aren’t just men. Heroes can range from being a small town sports team that just won a state championship or soldiers who saved a community from a terrorist group.…

When someone says “hero”, I don’t think of the stereotypical superman hero that is commonly recognized and associated with the word. I think of a normal, average person who goes out of their way to help or save someone in need. I take my parents as an example. They are ordinary people who help me and care for me, even though they don’t have any “superpowers”. They are kind, brave, and honest; three qualities that someone heroic or respected must have to be the way they are.…

But to me, a hero is so much more. A hero is not a man flying around in tight clothes with a cape. A hero is not someone who can run faster than the speed of light. A hero does not hide away until a light in the sky or a siren on the ground summons him to get up and use some make believe power to capture a villain in a mask and hand him over to the police.…

People have admired heroes ever since the dawn of mankind. Heroes portray traits that humanity values. As the ancient Greeks said, “Tell me who you admire and I’ll tell you who you are.” People are in need of heroes because they characterize our ideals: “Collectively and individually we continue to be a people in search of sages; anxious and eager to find people worthy of our love and loyalty” (Harper 1). Some people do not know that they are even someone’s hero. When a person has the power to stand strong and fight for what they believe in they too can be a hero. These are the type of people that give others hope and save lives each and every day. You do not have to have super powers to save someone, you do not have to be in a position or a career where the main goal is to save someone’s life such as a doctor, a policeman or a firefighter. Heroes can be everyday people, such as a teacher; who teaches kids the everyday essentials of life to grow and be a better person, a parent; who guides and raise their children and protect their children, and even a janitor or trash man; people that help keep the environment clean for our safety and…
