Definition Essay: What Does Rude Mean?

Rude Rude is a rather simple word to give a definition. With paraphrasing, the definition is “something done to offend or upset.” Despite this, applying the word is not quite as easy. The same thing can be either completely rude or completely justifiable depending on the circumstances of that action, and tiny, nearly insignificant facts can change the entire way the same action can be perceived. For example, a woman is walking to a store with a heavy box full of expensive ceramic bowls. She almost to the door and the box begins to feel like it is slipping out of her hands. A man happens to be in front of her and is in the middle of walking in the door. He turns around to see her, and even though he is entirely aware of her current situation, he decides to go in anyways without helping, letting the door close and leaving her stuck outside temporarily. By letting the door shut on her, that guy was being rude. He acted in a way that was harmful to her and was not even beneficial to him. For example, say a man is the only person around for miles who sells something essential to life. Despite how many people are telling him the prices on said thing are far too high, he refuses to cut down the price. At first, this guy seems to be rude. He’s forcing people to pay a fortune for something the people need, but there’s a little more to the story. The thing this man sells has an extremely high production cost due to a shortage in one of the materials. He has a family to feed, and the only way for him to make a profit on the item is to bump the price up as high as he does. Now, the man isn’t necessarily rude. Nothing in the story has changed, but that one small slice of information turned actions from rude to justifiable. A small change in perspective was enough to change the appearance of his
