Definition Essay: The Role Of Violence In Our Society

Violence is deeply structured in our system causing: physical, social psychological and environmental damages over time. Violence is detrimental to kids growing up in society they become immune to violence over time. Participating in unacceptable violence would lead to a citizens’ behavioral consequences. When violence is used in a certain manner it is acceptable to society. For example, the violence used against a criminal in an “eye for eye circumstances” is a social norm. The children will accept any type of violence, especially direct violence. Direct violence is the intentional use of force that results in an injury or death. Examples would be rape, murder or assault, even a verbal attack. Another type is cultural violence, using the image of culture to justify or legitimize uses of structures. …show more content…

Symbolic Violence is practiced through educational systems, media, parents, and religion and family values. The last type of violence is structural violence, which are the groups, classes, and genders that get special privileges in society over other groups. This privileged group has more access to better resources and goods.
