Maturity. A topic with so much depth. Yet its hardly talked about. When I hit puberty I heard you’re becoming a woman… did this mean I was maturing? Society hears comments like these from family and friends all of the time. As stated in the dictionary maturity is said to be when one is fully developed. But what does fully developed even mean? Maturity is shown in many different ways, one possibly being age. It is like in our society there was something wired in our brains telling us that the more years you have lived the more mature you are. Could it be that once you have turned 21 your fully mature/developed? How can one decide without having a preconceived judgement. For example, in America the legal drinking age is 21 but in Australia the …show more content…
The most common judgement of maturity occurs based on physical appearance. Physical maturity is the easiest to understand. It can be scientifically proven and is seen several times in a day. For example walking up and seeing your parents, younger siblings, or significant others you can make an assumption on physical maturity based on visible marks/changes. For example almost all grandparents have wrinkles and when developing them one is now “old.”In our society this kind of maturity is also based on physical milestones one goes through. Specifically for instance woman have a hugely recognized physical milestone in their lives which is menstruation. It is the most socially accepted because it is hard to deny what is visible. Considering this where does one stand based on certain milestones they have reached? One would have to in particular qualify how mature you are once one has started menstruating. In today’s society the older you are, the wiser you are. Wrinkles on the skin would visually make you old. How is this fair if one could develop wrinkles prematurely. One has to have a general understanding on physical maturity not being a perfect way of determine maturity although it may be the easiest to see. Emotional maturity may be harder to understand but it plays a part in someone’s maturity

In the article “What is the Age of Responsibility?” written by Alan Greenblatt is about the issue of maturity and what the age should be the mark of responsibility but maturity comes not with age but when someone is responsible. Some people mature earlier than others. It’s when people have to make augmentations to their life in order to function well in the real world. Age shouldn't be a symbol for maturity but how one responds to a situation.…

In today’s society, many people argue that teenagers can’t be mature because of how young they are. However, being mature isn’t really about being a particular age, but rather going through experiences and learning from them. For instance, in the book “The Glass Castle”, the author Jeannette Walls was forced to take cake of her brother and sister’s because of her unstable mother and father. Weeks passed before her siblings had food, water, or even a home.…

Do my parents not constitute as being mature because they didn't go to college? What happens to the low income families who can't afford to pay their tuition? What people must understand is that a myriad of people, especially in today's society can't fit into these five categories because they are not able to or maybe they just don't want to. If a person chooses not to get married for whatever reason, does that constitute his or hers level of maturity? The problem with these milestones in society are that they are no longer as relevant as they use to be.…

There are many different opinions on the age of responsibility and adulthood. In Alan Greenblatts article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?”, he discusses how people often think 18 is too young to be considered an adult but yet there are many contradictions against the claim. With so many factos influencing what people think maturaity means, people should be considered adults at 18 because that is when teens start experiencing adult things and start making real life decisons. The age of maturity should be measured not by age but by the persons life experiences. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, completed a study with, “... More than 30,000 people showing that 30% of American teens are more competent than the median adults in a variety of ways”.…

Growing up is something we go through from the time we are born to the time we die. We start off being helpless, alone and wondering what our next move will be. We rely so much on our parents to give us guidance, knowing right from wrong and learning how to survive on our own. As time goes on, we grow up into a teenager where we think we know everything about the world and that we are entitled to everything. After we grow out of the teenager stage we begin into adulthood where we make our choices, decisions, and plan out our career path.…

Maturity is a concept that may be hard to define but can be perceived in multiple ways. Being mature does not necessarily have an age, and it does not just happen overnight. Achieving a level of maturity depends on a person’s sense of responsibility, humility and wisdom. Being a mature person also includes having a sense of self and knowing who you are. Although some may see maturity as being serious rather than silly or an individual having the ability to act responsibly, the key to maturity is putting others before oneself and knowing the difference between what is right and wrong.…

We as a society have come to believe that everybody should feel good at all times, and no one should be left out. We start with the youth and the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality. Sure, it makes you feel great to get rewarded for doing something great but after having a horrible season, a trophy just seems to add insult to injury. Now I'm not talking about the 6 year olds who come on to the field and give it their all for the fun of just playing a sport (score should not even be kept at this age, just let the little players find out if they even like the game), but when 13 and 14 year olds expect a trophy for showing up, I draw the line and I believe rightfully so.…

Physiologically girls can have children after starting menarche. I would not consider an eleven or twelve year old an adult. However, for many couples having a child does mark the beginning of adulthood. For example, as mentioned before, in the state of California a person is considered an adult once they turn 18, but not everyone who turns 18 is mature or prepared to make wise choices. However, if a person was considered an adult at the age of 21, it would be understandable because many people at the age of 21 are more likely to be mature. A person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because by that age they are wiser, have less peer pressure, and are more responsible, on the other hand, someone people, despite their age, are responsible.…

Young people have continually been a huge subject in our society. People often define youth as just a period between childhood and adult age, but youth is not simply that. There can be a variety of different ways in which we can identify youth and its true meaning in relation to different aspects and influences in our surroundings. Youth can be argued as a social construct rather than a universal concept because everyone has different experiences in their lives and not everyone experiences youth. It is important to understand every aspect that contributes to what youth is, because there is so much more to youth than a group of people or an age.…
