The Pursuit towards Perfection
In life we are always aspiring to something. A higher mark in a class, a spot on a sports team, an acceptance to a particular university, or a parent’s approval. Whatever the goals may be, they push you to keep trying. One could argue that by focusing on these goals, you are trying to be perfect. Oxford’s Dictionary provides two main definitions of the word. Firstly, it means to “have all the required or desirable qualities or characteristics, and to be as good as it is possible to be”. The word can also mean “completely free of faults or defects.” This second definition can become negative, and is likely what led Anna Quindlen to say that it is really amazing to give up on being perfect. Nobody is truly perfect, and we must remember that in our arbitrary fight towards perfection. It will never be achieved. As long as we realize that, we can still work towards being perfect, as a light at the end of the tunnel, to guide us along our way. In contrast to what Quindlen suggested, it is not ideal to give up on being perfect, as perfection can motivate us, and as students we will change immensely as we grow up.
