Definition Essay: The Importance Of Diversity In Our Society

The concept of diversity encompasses the acceptance and respect of each individual. This means recognizing and understanding that everyone is unique. However many people fear the diversity in our society because of their prejudice towards dissimilarity. Our differences include our ethnicity, culture, socio-economic status, and languages.

Firstly, ethnicity is a concept in its self. It includes skin pigment and heritage. Some people don’t want to marry someone different because they worry that their ethnicity will disappear within the diversity. For example, a white person might not want to procreate with an Asian person because Asian genes are stronger than the genes originating from Europe. So their child would look more of Asian background.

The cause of these wars is diversity. Diversity causes various conflicts like wars on religion, racism and prejudice. However, some think it is not diversity that causes conflict, it is ignorance, An example where ignorance caused harm was in the United States, Florida. A young man named Trayvon Martin was shot by the neighborhood watch because he was thought to be holding drugs. The black teenager was not in fact holding drugs, just skittles. It was the prejudice and ignorance that the neighborhood watch held for black men that killed the innocent man. At the least, you must understand that everyone is different in order to prevent the development of stereotypes, prejudice and hate against others. In addition, the fact that you accept people different from yourself does not mean you own culture will deteriorate. But essentially, even though you may not like diversity, the concept of diversity is important because it is about moving beyond simply tolerating differences and embracing the diversity within each
