Definition Essay: The Color Of Gray Hair

Great Essays
As the youngest of seven children, I was and still am the baby. My oldest brother was twenty one years old and away at college when I was born. He and I have never lived in the same house, but we grew up in the same environment. For me, my brother was always old. He is the same age as a lot of my friend’s parents, but he and I are very close. Especially since our parents have passed away. About ten years ago, he called to ask me to go someplace with him. I told him I had a hair appointment. His comment was “what does that take, forty five minutes or so?” I told him I would be at least two hours, he retorted “What are they doing, cutting one hair at a time?” I said “no, it takes that long for the color”. He was silent for a good thirty seconds. In an incredulous tone with wonder he said “you color your hair?” I said “of course I color my hair”. I asked him “what color was mom’s hair when she was …show more content…
Proverbs 16:31 says “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life” (New Oxford Annotated Bible). Biblically, gray hair is a symbol of a good and godly life. Our culture tells a different story, especially for women. In a 2012 Huffington Post article, David Scher, a civil rights attorney in Washington D.C. is quoted as saying "I think women in the workplace are highly pressured to look young. If I were an older working person, the last thing I would do is go gray." In certain industries older “gray haired” women may not be thought of in the same light as younger women. In a competitive job market, many women feel pressured to retain an energetic youthful appearance. Statistics from the same Huffington Post article show that in 1950, 7 percent of women dyed their hair; whereas today it is closer to 95 percent or more, depending on geographic location (2012). Women want to be competitive in the job market where natural gray hair may be interpreted as being tired or old. It is a personal choice for

Women and men have always been depicted differently throughout the years, it seems certain stereotypes of femininity and masculinity will always play an underlying role in why advertisements for gender-specific products are displayed and targeted towards viewers the way that they are. This is particularly true when looking at magazines. Society is constantly being reminded of the fact that the images shown to them in magazines are being altered and enhanced in order to highlight natural qualities of both the male and female genders. Women are made to look thinner in some areas while curvier in other areas, and men are made to look bulkier and more muscular in comparison to the women. But besides the obvious physical changes that magazine editors make to pictures in their…

I’ve usually learned in hard way because frankly, I love to challenge myself to expand my personal capacity. Although I had already talked to one of my classmates about having interview with her as a Caucasian woman, I decided to do it with my cousin’s friend, Jacob, who I met in my place for the first time during Thanksgiving holidays. Interviewing Jacob about his interactions with other cultures has made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the meaning of the privilege and holding it. Jacob was a 24-year-old Caucasian, who lived in Missouri his entire life. Though he was visiting California for the second time in his life, he was in a Persian house for the first time.…

“Ginger” and “little red” and “copper head” and the ever so famous “carrot top” were just a few of many nicknames that once taunted my childhood. It seemed to be that I did not have a name, but rather I was just “the redhead.” Always sticking out like a sore thumb, I was surrounded by a family of dark brown hair and undoubtedly seemed to be the only child in the class with the uncommon genes of fiery red hair, a galaxy of freckles that covered my body, and the fairest of skin that would burn at the slightest of interaction with the sun. As a result of the little resemblance I share with my family, people often mistaken me for someone else’s child or demanded an explanation.…

Every kid wants to experiment when they are younger. Some of us just seem to make a massive mess when we do it. Of course our parents always tell us that we should be careful not to stain our carpets with anything, and that is where I made my mistake. I was sitting in my room bored with nothing to do. May I remind you that this is not a good thing for a seven year old to be doing.…

When I was eight, I watched my eldest brother graduate from high school. As I peered around the forest of tree trunk legs to catch a glimpse of the royal blue gown swishing around his ankles, he grew in my eyes. Now, my relatives exclaimed, he was an adult, but I could not understand what made him this way because he had always seemed grown to me. When I was 12, I watched my other brother stride across a stage at his high school, though this time I was tall enough to admire more than just his ankles. I saw the boy who held my hand to cross a fallen tree, who covered my innocent ears when his friends would let filthy words slip, the boy who let me win at Pokemon even though I only picked the “pretty” ones.…

It then analyzes how this battle consequently influences the way African American women manage their impressions with how they chose to wear and style their hair. My study is specifically looking at how African American women use hair as a tool of expression and self-presentation in today’s society. African American hair has been studied in a historical context, analyzing the cultural significance dating back to African tribes (Byrd & Tharps, 2001) as well as the commodification of the afro during the Civil Rights Movement (Walker, 2000). While historical accounts contextualize the phenomenon of black hair, other studies analyze…

Communication theories help create an understanding of different perspectives happening in particular events. I recently went through a critical incident that made me realize the differences in photography norms and how tension can create contradictions in my relationships. During October of last year, my sister-in-law contacted me to take photos for her family, including my oldest brother and their newborn. The photos were special because they only had a few of them together from a tripod, but were not professionally done by another photographer. We arranged on a date and time, aimed for the morning, in the backyard of my parents’ house.…

Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Race refers to a person's physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye color. Ethnicity, however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, and language. No one is born with a choice of choosing which race or ethnicity they want to belong.…

All over the country, women and men color their hair. Some color their hair to cover grey and have a younger appearance, while others color their hair for the fun of it. According to a 2008 poll by Clairol, seventy-five percent of American women color their hair, and eighty-eight percent of women feel their hair has an effect on their confidence. Skin tone plays a huge factor in which hair color suits a person and what hair color will make them feel the most confident; darker skin complexions will not be able to pull of the same color hair as someone who has a lighter complexion. Skin tones can be described as fair, light, medium, and dark.…

While stress may cause certain issues, the questions is, can the stress really change the color of the hair? In certain age, hair starts to change its color, and in most cases, first white hairs are noticeable in the thirties. Some people may notice a few grey hairs earlier, while some won’t have a single grey hair until they are in the fifties. The question is, is the stress the main reason of premature greying, or is it genetics, or some other reasons?…
