Thanksgiving Grace!

And I’m not just talking about the prayer before the meal! 

This year, with all of its good times, is almost over. But what a great time Thanksgiving is. It’s a time to reflect on the year’s past, examine the present, and look forward to what God has in store for the future in 2018. I think God wants our attitude to be...“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1)

One all-encompassing word comes to my mind at this time...Grace! That’s what I am forever thankful for. Looking back I realize it was by God’s grace that He reached down to scoop me up from my life caught up in sin. It was by grace that He gave me my beautiful wife Ina and it was by grace that God made me dad to two

Thanksgiving, a holiday deeply rooted in American culture, is celebrated in accordance with the applicable tradition and rituals. Closely related to the tradition of first immigrants, Thanksgiving does not undergo any fashions and fluctuations. Thanksgiving Turkey has to be big ( 19 lbs) to feed 20 people and to provide much more food than during the regular meal (Friends). Thanksgiving dinner without turkey and typical dishes does not exist, like “4th July with no pie”(Friends). “Jehovah ebuliwo m elu elu higher higher, ebuliwo m elu elu higher higher” are the lyrics to one of my favorite Igbo Christian gospels my family sings during prayer. I have always enjoyed singing the song and shouting “higher, higher” at the top of my lungs with my sisters and brother. In English, the lyrics mean “God has lifted me up higher” and I have learned to not only recognize that, but to be grateful for it as well. I am thankful to have been exposed to faith at an early age and I am also thankful for how it has impacted and influenced the women I am today. Through that and my parents impute, I continue to learn to look at the world more openly with a more optimistic stance and to be independent and self-determined.…

It’s really beautiful that at the forefront of each of Paul’s letters He includes a Thanksgiving and Prayer section, and I think it’s really reflective of how we are called to live daily, first thanking God for all he has done. Much of what Paul is praying for I pray too for myself, that ‘my heart might be enlightened in order [to] know the hope to which he has called [me]’ (1:18) I can’t image how different my life would look if I looked forward at God’s redemptive plans not as a hopeful wish but a confident expectation of what is to come. If I truly believed what I say, that ‘my hope comes from Him’ (Psalm 62:5), isn’t Jesus’s return one of the only things I can confidently cling to in this world?…

Have you ever noticed how in the stores you will see a plethora of Halloween costumes, decorations and the like but immediately following Halloween, you see Christmas themed decorations all over and very little to commemorate Thanksgiving? The most I've seen have had leaves and maybe a cornucopia and really only enough scattered throughout the store to fill a half to one whole aisle. It seems that our national holiday is only truly named and observed within "leaked" black friday ads, alerting you to when the advertised deals start. This never really bothered me in the past. As a little girl Thanksgiving was all about the Macy's Parade, the dog show, food, and the countdown until santa claus and presents galore.…

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all of the wonderful people in one’s life. Thanksgiving shouldn’t be ephemeral because it’s a long celebration with loved ones surrounding you. Before every meal, my grandfather prays no malice upon us for the rest of our lives. For that moment in time, it feels as if God is rinsing the evil away because of my grandpa’s prayer. The feast isn’t opulence but that doesn’t matter because we don’t need luxurious things.…

As this year’s Thanksgiving Day approached and I contemplated on the things for which I am grateful, I pondered on the importance of having an appreciative heart. I tend to be the person who is quick to give thanks to God when all goes well. Besides being a day to stuff our faces and fall asleep in the middle of the afternoon, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and give thanks for all of the wonderful things in your life. While it may be obvious that you should be thankful for your health, family, and that winning scratch-off you found in the parking lot (hey, 16 bucks is 16 bucks), you should also be thankful for your loyal customers who have been bringing you business for years. By taking the opportunity this Thanksgiving to thank your customers, you will not only make them feel good, you will more easily retain them. Remember, reselling to old customers is far easier than acquiring new ones (which typically costs more) and selling to them. A little thanks this holiday season will go a long way at keeping your loyal…

t’s the season to pause and reflect on the things that we are thankful for - our family, friends and neighbors, good health and good fortune, and the meals before us. Many of us will gather around the table and give thanks for the things and the people that enrich and brighten our lives every day, especially when we might overlook them. But one of the most important things that so many of us are grateful for is something seldom mentioned at Thanksgiving dinner: water. It’s something so basic and so often taken for granted.…

Thanksgiving Day is a family holiday, where we get to enjoy a delicious meal together. The First Thanksgiving was very different from what our Thanksgiving is today. The smaller birds were spit-roasted, while the bigger birds were boiled.…
