What is Funny? What is funny? What determines when something is funny? What do we gain by laughing? It only occurred to me when I had nothing to do while I was staring out the window of a my mom's car. I tried to puzzle every moment that I could remember the past 18 years of my life that involved me laughing or finding something humorous, even coming up with thoughts and ideas that would make me chuckle. The most unusual event that I could remember vividly was when I was still living in The Bahamas (officially named: Commonwealth of The Bahamas). I was about 11 years old at the time, my grandmother walked into the room that I was in and stood in the entrance of the door. I said “Hi Grammy”, but she didn’t say a word. With differing personalities comes different “tastes” in quality (including a sense of humor). There is also the fact that people change their “tastes” in what they find appealing. Point being that what is funny is subjective; what is funny to someone may not be funny to …show more content…
“We often laugh simply because someone

else is laughing. Laughter, like yawning, is behaviorally contagious, and we can catch it easily

from other people, especially if we know them.” (Scott). That explained everything! I had never

shared a connection with the characters that was in the sitcoms, but the individuals around me

did, especially when parts of the episodes were not funny to me.

I have covered what can make something funny, why we tend to favor something funny, and

why something may not be funny to everyone. However, I have not spoken of the positives of

finding something funny and laughter. “Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools

you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health”

(McGhee). Laughter is fundamental (pun intended), not only does laughing set one’s mood, but

also relieves stress from the body. I personally agree with what McGhee spoke of, having a good

laugh has not only kept me emotionally healthy but also has kept me physically too. After

Society, as a whole, is like a well-run clock. The combination of multiple different pieces, all with varying functions, all working together, and all serving unique roles produces a fantastically designed final product. Interestingly enough, our culture is analogous to the running of a time-keeping machine. Society also includes many different individuals who have personal beliefs and opinions, and each individual serves a vital purpose to the overall purpose of the group formed by these individuals. Alan de Botton, in his book Status Anxiety, argues that humorists are one of the most important individuals involved in our society, as they are able to deliver oftentimes controversial messages to their audiences.…

A sexually uptight TV host, who has never had an orgasm, embarks on a sexual odyssey to experience her first one, but her obsession jeopardizes her engagement. STORY COMMENTS FINDING HER O presents as a raunchy, romantic comedy with an organically funny premise with the idea of the protagonist going in search of her first orgasm. It’s a fun concept. It’s also refreshing to have a female protagonist drive the plot and, in addition, it nice to see a script that focuses on the sexual dysfunction of the central female character rather than on the male counterpart. The topic should resonate with both the female and male adult audience.…

People in today’s society have adopted humor and comedies into their everyday lives, whether it’d be from shows such as Saturday Night Live or from a cartoon column in the newspaper. The success of these humorous selections comes from the entertainment value as well as the sheer value of laughter. Through these positive, light-hearted responses, viewers of humorous programs associate the authors of these comedies with harmless, beneficial motivations. Stephen Colbert relayed his thoughts during an interview, saying, “You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time.” Thus, de Botton’s view on the role of humorists is correct as it identifies humorists as effective messengers.…

    Summary Of Humor Response

I love how this article mentioned so many different reasons for hypotheses of the function of humor or studies that humor has been associated with, but then the authors also note that many of the studies were not empirical or were case studies. I appreciate in their conclusion when they mention that they did not feel as though even their main theory of humor, the threshold theory, could explain everything about humor and why it occurs. I think the humor responses occurs for a variety of reasons and it is subjective to the speaker if they are the ones looking to evoke it and the listener as to how it is interpreted. I think both the threshold theory and the incongruity theory both make sense in different situations and perhaps even in the same…

The concept of humor is targeted around a person producing a comical statement or something that produces laughter and enjoyment to an audience. In the book titled Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton, the writer hypothesizes that the position of humor in society is to bring out repressed mind and messages that regular human beings can relate and apprehend without restriction from others. I trust that de Botton's stance toward humor having a vital role within the feature of society is true, because humor does indiscreetly permit people to freely vocalize and itemize information without the contraints of society on them, but additionally gives people greater awareness of the presence of wrongs in a society through making the observation surrounding…

Humor at the Expense of Blonde White Women Throughout the history of mankind, human beings have expressed humor in the form of laughter; a sense of humor as we perceive it today is a relatively recent construct of modern day social scientists and psychologists (Holland, 1982).However, our sense of humor, as well as our conception of the same is not static but changes with the changing consciousness of the society. As societies become more complex, our understanding of the concept of or sense of humor similarly becomes more complex. In recent times, comedy has proven itself to be an extremely popular film genre whose appeal and acceptance spans across nationalities, races and generations throughout the world. Traditionally, comedy involving beautiful blonde white women has sourced its humor from people’s perceived naivety and superficiality of beautiful blonde women.…

The part with the humor is when the teacher says to the main character, “You’re going to hit yourself over the head with that soe aren't you?” (Cohan, 360). This appears in a confrontational context where the teacher confront the main character.
