Definition Essay On Tasha

Throughout history names were given to newborn babies by their parents. Thanks to my father, I’m named Tasha. Occasionally babies would be named after a deceased relative or because they like the name but my name came when my father was praying to God and he told dad to name me Tasha. Cool, right? Afterward, my mother calls me lil’mama and chocolate drop when she’s proud of me and is bragging about me to her friends or coworkers, which is often. She gave me the nickname lil’mama because I’m always helping someone with the little kids or cleaning. She also gave me the nickname chocolate drop because out of all her four kids, I was the only one born with chocolate brown skin. My father calls me Tasha-washa for reasons he and I don’t understand. As a result of my name meaning “born on Christmas day,” it reminds me of Christmas time at my grandparents’ church. It always looks cheerful and joyful everywhere. There's a full house of family-friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents with a Christmas tree in the midst of it all. When Ashna’Beah first came along I was already four months pregnant. My breathing partially off, feet swollen to the ankles, waddling around like a penguin. She wasn’t so attractive to the point that it made her unapproachable but her looks just made you wonder what she was doing in a place like this.…

Arguably one of the important decisions people have to make upon becoming parents is picking a name for their newborn child, a handle he can proudly use for the rest of his life. As the naming paradigm seems to be shifting towards more variety and creativity1, the artisans of new names have to pay attention to the thin line between unique and odd, culturally representative and obscure and powerful and offensive.
